Among those present was James C. Leslie, Staubach’s 33-year-old chief financial officer, a deliberate man with an M.B.A. from the University of Michigan. In the course of the conversation, Leslie recalls, Rainwater very delicately hinted that he might be open to doing business with Staubach. ”We would have missed it if we hadn’t been listening real hard,” Leslie says.
