Construction for the theater, provided by VCC and Jolley Builders, began on Frisco Square Boulevard just west of the George A. Purefoy Municipal Building back in January this year.

“We’ve had to be very focused to meet all the expectations of our tenant and get it open in time,” one of the managing partners of Frisco Square Development Cathy Sweeney said. “We did not have the luxury of missing one deadline, and so we didn’t.”

Frisco Square is aiming to have the theater open in time for Thanksgiving, and Sweeney said details about a grand opening will be out closer to the completion. As for the status of the theater now, plenty of parking areas are already visible and the construction crew is working on drilling bores for steel. In the next few weeks, the theater will go vertical.

Sweeney said the Cinemark Theater in Frisco should draw in, not only Frisco residents, but visitors from the other side of the tollway, since the theater will be separate from a mall-type atmosphere.

“We think that the location of Cinemark will attract all families, adults and children and further enhance the family-oriented environment that we’ve created at Frisco Square,” Sweeney said.

Although the theater is expected to have 12 screens, it is designed with an option to expand to up to 14 screens. This movie theater will also boast the XD, or Extreme Digital concept. XD auditoriums are exclusive to Cinemark, with wall-to-wall screens, custom JBL sound systems and 2-D and 3-D projection capabilities. According to Cinemark’s website, XD – Extreme Digital Cinema provides a “maximum comfort entertainment environment” ensuring that “every seat is an intense sensory experience.”

Additional features of the theater will include: stadium seating, “print at home” tickets through the Cinemark website and a self-serve concessions area.

To catch a glimpse of the construction as it progresses each week, the community can take part in the Movies in the Square events each Friday night through July, as both the theater and the free flicks are located close to each other in Simpson Plaza. As extra incentive, Cinemark is raffling free movie tickets at the Movies in the Square events.
